History
A town grew higher in the late mediaeval period around a textile industry, its wealth preserved in its fifteenth century parish church. It late prospered as a coaching stop in the Georgian period. Notable Georgian buildings include Crewkerne Town Hall.

St Bartholomew's Parish Church around Crewkerne is one of a virtually all beautiful & interesting of the numerous splendid churches inside Somerset. Standing in higher ground west of a town centre, these are the focal point of an attractive rural prospect of the american side of the town. A number 1 church on this places was founded around Saxon days, prior to a prevent of the 9th century, as a "minster", a mother church of a Saxon royal estate that involved the late parishes of Seaborough, Wayford & Misterton. Nothing remains of this church, which wwhen replaced fallowing a Norman Conquest sustaining the real st1 building, cruciate inside shape & using a central tower in the equivalent pattern as the present one. This, successively, was nigh all rebuilt in the grander shell, in the late Fifteenth & early Sixteenth centuries. the effect was, basically, a church i have in todays world, a superb lesson of the Perpendicular style sustaining numbers of unusual & single features. Among these i personally can include a monumental west front, a high & spacious, though short, nave, a huge six-weak aisle windows & a telling collection of Tudor-style chapels & windows northward east corner. A building poop throughout is the beautiful golden-coloured Ham Hill stone, quarried two or three miles northward of Crewkerne.

There is no major structural alterations keep around taken place since a Reformation in the 1530's & 1540's, however there st& been drastic changes to its furnishings and fittings to lawsuit a various phases of protestant worship that followed. Considerable damage, including a destruction of most of a mediaeval stained glass, was done in the period of the Civil War. Per early 19th century, all a mediaeval furnishings, except a font (a survival from either the Norman church) experienced disappeared & the church was re-pewed & galleries added inside 1808-11. A primary restoration that left a church interior when i understand it at present, took place in the late 19th Century; it was supplementary sympathetic to the church's architectural character than several Victorian restorations. At this instance, a central segment of a west gallery was flushed to reveal a dandy west window & the organ that stood there was resettled south transept. A church bench date from either around 1900 & own attractive carven bench-stops.

Prefer numbers of Anglican churches, St Bartholomew's has to reconcile the conservation of a Grade One historic building by having 21st century expectations within terms of comfort & facilities. a Parish Project, still, adopts a caring tone & states that "the outstanding historic quality of our church building is an asset which plays a major role in welcoming people".
